Global Volunteers’ RCP Program directly addresses the damage done by poorhealth and nutrition to children before age 2. It's called stunting. Childhoodstunting is a “silent tragedy” affecting families all over the world today.Stunting begins in utero. If it is not stopped within the critical 1000 dayswindow from pregnancy to the 2nd birthday, it most often is permanent. These first 1000 days are the primary opportunity for interventions – theseare the days when the foundation is set for all the days that follow. Byproviding easy sources of fresh vegetables and protein through kitchengardens and eggs, and by preventing smoke inhalation through improvedstoves, volunteers working together with local families are reversing thedamage of childhood stunting. This is why you’re needed now!THE COSTS OF STUNTING24%of the world's children are seriously andpermanently adversely affected bystunting.1

CHICKEN COOPSProtein is the most expensivecomponent of a balanced diet inUkwega Ward. Chicken and eggproduction is a powerful investmentbecause chickens are easy andinexpensive to maintain, are anexcellent source of protein for familydiets, produce fertilizer, and are asource of income. A chicken coopprotects chickens from bad weatherand predators, and to keep the eggs inone place. Global Volunteers hastrained its local staff in the productionand management of chicken coops, and is ready to share this knowledgewith RCP families and supply themwith a chicken coop and 25 chicks withfeed. This will provide each family achicken and egg production operationto supply sufficient protein for theentire family.“Sometimes you will find yourself ina position that you don’t havemoney to buy even food for yourfamily, and you have chicken, butthe only option you have is to sellthe chicken so that you can getmoney. So sometimes it is ourpoverty that forces us to not enjoyour hard work." ~ Kijaneth Kitule, RCP motherCONTAINER GARDENSEarthBox® is a patented system thatutilizes several different componentsto produce significantly better resultsthan traditional in-ground gardens.EarthBoxes are excellent for growingvegetables in small areas as they canbe set on tables. Pregnant women orwomen carrying babies on their backs, therefore, do not face the difficulty ofbending over to tend to an in-groundgarden. EarthBoxes are very easy to maintainin that they do not become infectedwith any soil-borne diseases or weeds.Additionally, they yield fast results.Through the RCP program, motherswith a child or children under the ageof two receive five EarthBoxes andpregnant women receive four. In Tanzania, we grow tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, green peppers, spinach, and Chinese cabbage. The benefits of Earthboxes are well-known in villages in the Ukwega Ward. In conjunction with the rest of ourefforts, they are already making adifference in the lives of hundreds offamilies in rural Tanzania.

COOKING STOVESMost people in developing countriesstill cook over open fire. These indoorfires are usually fueled by solidmaterials such as wood, dung, or cropresidue – many of which releaseharmful emissions into the air as theyburn. These emissions, in turn, act as acatalyst for respiratory infections.Global Volunteers has selected a fuelefficient stove design that vents thesmoke out of the cooking area, improves combustion, and reduces theamount of fuel needed to cook. Asless wood is needed to cook, womenwill spend less time collecting woodand will have more time to care fortheir children. Our goal is to supply these stoves to all610 RCP families and four schools inthe Ukwega ward. With an averagefamily of seven, more than 4,250family members and 1,500 schoolchildren will benefit from healthier, safer, and more efficient stoves.“The mud stove was not made byquality materials and when there wasrain, the stove broke. But the stoveGlobal Volunteers built in my home isefficient, safe, with less smoke andonly a little firewood. I am so thankfulthat Global Volunteers chose todemonstrate this stove in my housebecause it’s very helpful. I did nothave money to afford this type ofstove.”~ Prisca Magomola, RCP motherWORKSHOPSVolunteer professionals conductregular interactive workshops at thevillage RCP Center. Topics focus onfood, nutrition, infectious disease andeducation. Global Volunteers directsthis knowledge transfer throughculturally appropriate curriculumwhich volunteers use and adapt basedon their experience and expertise.Knowing what foods to eat and drinkdoesn’t come naturally to people. Weall must learn about the nutrition weneed and the foods that offer the bestnutrition. Poverty interrupts bothaccess to and education about propernutrition. Through volunteerprofessionals – working and retirednutritionists, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, and studentsin those disciplines – Global Volunteersprovides nutrition education toparents and students. These hands-on workshops touch ontopics such as nutrition, foodproduction, and meal preparation. Thebasics can be understood by andtaught to youth and adults alike.Lessons are offered in school roomclasses and parent workshops in groupsettings. The lessons taught at parentworkshops and in schools arereinforced through home visits, wherelocal staff follow each family’sprogress, help them adopt hygienetechnologies, and encourage them tokeep working towards a healthylifestyle.
