Philosophy of Service Global Volunteers work with local people in achieving community-driven human and economic development. Our service programs are grounded in a philosophy of service which acknowledges that local people are responsible for their own development and that outside volunteers can help catalyze, encourage, and support local efforts. To that end, we serve: • Only where we are invited, Under the direction of local leaders, On community-based projects, Doing only what we are asked to do, and Hand-in-hand with local people. Four Decades of Service • Founded in 1984, we have mobilized 41,000 short-term volunteers on long-term development projects in hundreds of communities. • We focus on children, especially those living in rural poverty, changing the arc of their life forever. • Service programs are for one, two, and three weeks, with some for longer periods. • We are the oldest and largest non-sectarian international volunteer development organization in the U.S. Outstanding Volunteer Satisfaction: • 85 percent of our volunteers submit an individual service program evaluation • 98 percent rate their service program at 4.5 or higher on a five-point scale • 40 percent of volunteers on any one service program have served with us previously. Volunteers’ Goals & Objectives Volunteers experience high satisfaction because we meet their goals and objectives. Work Projects – we only do what we are asked to do • Deliver Essential Services – projects that eradicate hunger, improve health, and enhance cognition • Teach Conversational English – the international language of opportunity • Support Community Development – paint, repair, and maintain community buildings • Supplement School-Based Curriculum – teach teachers and tutor/teach math, science, geography, and public health
Everyone is Needed, Everyone can Volunteer! • Individuals, couples, parent and child, grandparent and child, and entire families volunteer • Students, retirees, and folks from every occupation volunteer • Employer groups, student groups, and faith-based groups all volunteer Volunteers Comfort & Safety Volunteers express high satisfaction because we offer a variety of accommodation choices and are mindful of the comfort and safety of all volunteers • Lodging Hotels – 60% of programs are in double occupancy hotel accommodations (singles available for an extra fee) Guest House – 40% of programs are in comfortable guest house accommodations (single, double, and family) • Meals All meals are local cuisine, most are provided at the lodging or in restaurants, some are home-cooked by people we employ • Transportation Airport pickups and returns, mostly in vans • Safety Our mantra is “Safety Trumps Everything” Purified water is always available; food prepared with North American stomachs in mind Engage reputable drivers and transportation companies Worldwide Service Programs We offer a variety of service programs: • 41,000 volunteers have served in over 200 communities in 37 countries on six continents • In large cities, small towns, and remote rural villages • At the invitation of local governments, NGOs, colleges & universities, elementary & high schools, hospitals & health clinics, faith-based organizations, national government agencies, cooperatives, orphanages, and village leaders Exceptional Community Partners • We are hosted by national, provincial, community, and local leaders in the countries served • Our community partners want and need every volunteer to be engaged in productive service to the maximum extent possible • We return to the same communities many times each year, year after year, thus ensuring that every volunteer has a genuine opportunity to contribute to the long-term development of the host community Leadership • Our country managers are local nationals, fluent in English, highly educated, and enormously experienced. • All country managers are expert at leading teams of volunteers • Global Volunteers executive leaders have many decades of experience managing international human and economic development programs with advanced degrees in international development, international communications, business, marketing and law.
Tax Deductible All service program contributions, airfare, and visas are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers because: • Global Volunteers is a 501c-3 tax-exempt organization. • Volunteers perform full-time service for Global Volunteers. • Qualifying taxpayers save an average of 35 percent of their total program cost. Non-sectarian • Global Volunteers is a non-sectarian and non-political organization. • We respect all belief systems. International Partnerships Global Volunteers partners with more than 200 organizations and communities worldwide and has Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC.
